Simulating HSRP/VPC Failure on Nexus

When I am simulating HSRP/VPC Failure on Nexus I have tried shutting down the links and deleting the links while the gear is running and I still see traffic going across my wireshark capture. This results in some odd behavior in client connectivity when simulating shutting one side of a HSRP link.
I have to completely shut down a node and even then it takes a while for the lab to realize the node is down. Is trying to simulate these scenarios not feasible in virtualization?
