QEMU running too slow while trying to install Windows

Post by mareox » Sat Jun 24, 2017 4:28 am

Hi,

I am trying to install Windows using QEMU as per the tutorial instructions, but this is running extremely slow.
Any advice on what could be causing it?

My hardware and configurations are as follows:
* Host: Windows 10 x64 Pro, Nv SSD, i7 12 cores, 48 GB Ram.
* VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.7
* Intel VT-x enabled.
* Antivirus and Firewalls are disabled.

Code: Select all

grep vmx /proc/cpuinfo
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht syscall nx pdpe1gb rdtscp lm constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts nopl xtopology tsc_reliable nonstop_tsc aperfmperf eagerfpu pni pclmulqdq vmx ssse3 fma cx16 pcid sse4_1 sse4_2 x2apic movbe popcnt tsc_deadline_timer aes xsave avx f16c rdrand hypervisor lahf_lm abm ida arat epb pln pts dtherm tpr_shadow vnmi ept vpid fsgsbase tsc_adjust bmi1 avx2 smep bmi2 invpcid xsaveopt
Thank you,

CPU Limit is disabled.

Also, I am sharing 4 CPUs and 2 cores per processor.

i hope it is not win10...
that one is really slow on any machine KVM.
But win7 must be fine.

Again be sure that your AV has not enabled Virtual machine inspection !!!!
Avas for example make big troubles with it if it is enabled.

Thank you for the response.

Yes, I am trying to install win7.
My AV (AVG) has been disabled completely.
Anything else I should check?

After removing my AVG completely from my PC, the VM worked perfectly.
Those, I reinstalled it and looked into all the configs and found the root cause.
It seems that AVG has a virtualization inspection, similar to what you mentioned with AVAST.
I have unchecked the option as shown in the attached picture below, and tested my VMs and they worked perfectly now.

Thank you for the help.
