Question about EVE-NG Cluster

Before posting something, READ the changelog, WATCH the videos, howto and provide following:
Your install is: Bare metal, ESXi, what CPU model, RAM, HD, what EVE version you have, output of the uname -a and any other info that might help us faster.

Question about EVE-NG Cluster

Post by kkido » Wed Oct 20, 2021 2:13 pm

Hello EVE-NG team,

I have some questions regarding about cluster setup.

The cluster presentation doc https://www.eve-ng.net/wp-content/uploa ... .4-Pro.pdf, shows that the recommended cluster set up is 4-6 member per cluster.

Is there any reason that the recommendation is at least 4? And, is there any caveat if we make a cluster of 2-3 members instead of more than 4?

Also, from the same cluster presentation doc, my understanding is that we can mix servers with different hardware config or mix bare metal with ESXi VM. But, I could not find info in either the presentation doc or cookbook regarding how different they can be in their hardware performance (please point me to a doc/info if there is existing documentation).

Is there a threshold of how different the CPU/RAM/HDD performance can be on each server in a cluster?
(e.g. can we cluster a server that has the latest AMD Epyc CPU or Intel CPU with another server that has couple generations old Intel Xeon CPU as long as they meet the requirements in https://www.eve-ng.net/index.php/docume ... equirement ?)
(e.g. can we cluster a server that has NVMe storage with another server that has old HDD without causing performance issue on EVE-NG lab? )

I assume the best practice is to use similar spec across the cluster but could not find info about what the outcome would be if there is a huge gap in hardware performance between servers in a cluster.

We are planning to deploy a EVE-NG cluster and would like to know those information.

Thanks,

You can make cluster o 2 nodes either. It is no limitation here.
You can mix in any combination and CPUs, Intel or AMD.
If the servers are different performance, it will impact nodes on the lab which are assigned to particular server.
Please read eve pro cookbook chapter 15

Tested are Bare server combo with esxi VMs, no issues with cluster

Thank you for the response Uldis.

If there is no limitation with 2 nodes, what is the reason that 4-6 members is recommended per cluster in the cluster presentation https://www.eve-ng.net/wp-content/uploa ... .4-Pro.pdf (please see attached screenshot of the slide that I'm referring) ?

:)

you can make in cluster 2,3,4,5,6 members
like 2 cluster nodes
1x master
1x satellite

will work same as cluster of
1x master
3x or 4x satellites

no matter how many satellites will be added, I tested 6 nodes in cluster
1x master and
5x satellites

Optimal cluster setup would be
1xmaster
and up to 1-4 satellites
